RESEARCH SPECIALIST
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Provides research and analysis work in the medical/healthcare fields. Work involves acquiring and organizing research resources, providing information and materials in response to requests, and conducting research. Work involves assisting in the design, implementation, and analysis of epidemiological investigations or studies. Participates in general data management and report writing for research studies or educational materials. Works under minimal supervision with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED
Conducts comprehensive library research using professional journals, dissertations, and other literature. Conducts computer-assisted searches of bibliographic and textual medical/healthcare databases. Assists in the selection and acquisition of data, information, and materials for agency use.
Reviews technical medical research literature, interprets and analyzes findings, and reports results. Prepares or assists with preparing reports of research findings. Disseminates the results of research investigations, special studies, and surveillance data and prepares written and oral reports and presentations.
Writes informational pieces for the public such as research summaries and advisories on sexual health-related topics such as sexually transmitted infections and teen pregnancy. May research and answer questions from the public. Assists in managing organizational website(s) and uploading new materials to them.
Plans medical/healthcare research studies and analyses, and determines methods and strategies to be used for research. Assists with formulating research objectives, methodology, and priorities.
Assists in logistical planning and implementation of organization programs and trainings. May participate in quality assurance reviews.
Performs related work as assigned.
GENERAL QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES
Experience and Education:
Experience in healthcare/medical research. Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a master's degree in science, public health, research or a related field is generally preferred. Medical background/experience desirable. Experience and education may be substituted for one another.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of medical research design, methods, principles, and techniques. Skill in use of medical and healthcare research databases, statistical data interpretation, and problem-solving methods and techniques. Ability to work with abstract data, concepts, and requests; to prepare clear and concise reports; to communicate effectively; and to plan, assist and help in research and health education presentations.
