Trainings at MI

MI offers a number of trainings to health care professionals, health educators, public health advocates, and the general public. Some of these trainings are highlighted below:

1. Building Family Connections Training

The Medical Institute (MI) trains and certifies community- and faith-based educators on the Building Family Connections (BFC) Curriculum in a dynamic and interactive 2.5-day training. After completing the training educators are prepared to go out into your community and deliver this curriculum to parents and parenting adults.

The BFC curriculum, funded and reviewed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), teaches parenting adults skills to begin the lifelong conversation with youth about sex and healthy relationships.

The program aims to postpone the age of sexual debut in youth nationwide by increasing parental involvement in sexual health education. The 10-hour curriculum empowers parents and parenting adults with medically accurate sexual health information and skills on effective communication and decision making strategies to help youth grow up safe, smart, and strong.

MI has already certified many BFC trainers to hold training courses across the country. To learn more about this training, please click here

2. Online Medical Accuracy Training

The Online Medical Accuracy (OMA) Training was developed in response to the need for assessing and utilizing medically and scientifically accurate sexual health information.

Health educators and health care professionals have the responsibility to acquire and present credible and accurate information to their constituents but may not always know how to do so. The 4-hour Online Medical Accuracy Training consists of two training sessions conducted through webinars for easy and convenient access. Skills taught include those on seeking and evaluating health information for accuracy and using free online specialized research databases such as the National Library of Medicine's (NLM's) PubMed database.

This training teaches participants basic search strategies, how to locate full text research articles, additional Internet resources as well as how to evaluate sources for medical and scientific accuracy.

3.Building Healthy Relationships Training

The Medical Institute (MI) trains and certifies health educators and teachers on the Building Healthy Relationships (BHR) Curriculum for high school students in an interactive 3-day training. After completing the training educators are prepared to go out into your community and schools and deliver this curriculum to high school- aged adolescents.

Developed and revised with feedback from youth, the BHR Curriculum covers information for high school students on topics such as setting goals in life, money management, teen pregnancy, avoiding sexual activity, healthy and unhealthy relationships and choosing the right life partner.

In each grade, age-appropriate information is provided in 4 to 8 classroom sessions. In a demonstration project, use of this curriculum showed significant favorable changes in student knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs toward avoiding sexual activity. At the same time, the program schools reported declines in teen pregnancies and teen births.
