Gonorrhea is a common bacterial infection that infects over 700,000 Americans each year. Sometimes, there are not even symptoms with gonorrhea. However, untreated gonorrhea can lead to many devastating health complications. For instance, gonorrhea can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease in women, which often causes infertility. Men on the other hand can get epididymitis, a condition, which causes very painful swelling on the back of the testicle.
A strain of the bacteria that causes gonorrhea is becoming resistant to antibiotics. Consequently, gonorrhea could become an incurable disease fairly soon. The implications of this would be huge. Condoms may reduce one’s risk of contracting gonorrhea by about 50%. Abstinence or lifetime faithfulness to one uninfected partner is the only certain way to avoid being infected.
