As a non-profit, we are always in need of interns to help with our work. Come and help us achieve our mission of communicating accurate sexual health information to the public. Interns can help with organizing fundraising and development activities; materials marketing; graphic design; finding, analyzing and reporting medically accurate sexual health information; developing educational presentations; press releases and articles; and with other office-related tasks such as filing, inventory, packing and shipping. As an intern, you will learn a lot about health education material development and distribution as well as skills that are essential for success in any organization.

1. Health Research Internship position

Internship description including duties:

  • Performs junior-level statistical and epidemiological work. Work involves serving on teams of health specialists to implement epidemiological projects and evaluate effectiveness of programs including:
  • Assist in coordinating and conducting epidemiological investigations
  • Assist in designing and implementing data collection systems.
  • Assist in data analysis including data cleaning, preliminary analysis, data management, and descriptive and inferential statistical analysis.
  • Assists in preparing epidemiological reports and manuscripts and reports.
  • Assists with special research projects. Prepares scientific information for educational materials, media, and presentations.
  • May help prepare grants.
  • Works under supervision with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

Time period: 3-6 months

Skills and abilities desired:
Relevant courses from an accredited college or university with major course work in public health, health services research, health promotion, health education or equivalent.

Other skills desired include:

  • Knowledge of principles of biostatistics, public health and epidemiology.
  • Skill in using database and statistical analysis (eg, SAS, SPSS) applications.
  • Advanced skill in the use of Microsoft Office applications (eg, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access).
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in written format for various audiences.
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects.

This is an unpaid internship, with potential for a future stipend if funds are available. The position will provide an excellent opportunity to learn actual public health program planning, implementation and evaluation through data analysis.

2. Writer/PR/Development Internship position

Internship description including duties:

  • Duties include researching, drafting, proofreading, and fact-checking of sexual health related news materials.
  • Assist in research and follow up on HIV/AIDS sexually transmitted infections (STI) and sexual health related news and articles.
  • Assist in preparing blurbs for newsletters, media interviews, and responses to news articles.
  • Assist in indexing, clipping and filing, library maintenance, research, and correspondence.
  • Assist scientific staff in responding to email queries on sexual health-related research and news.
  • Assist in health educational material development and generate content for the Web.
  • Data entry and mailing projects including assisting in maintaining client relationships including developing new relationships.
  • Prepare and assist with delivery of e-mail and/or paper newsletters.
  • Assist with the coordinating of our direct mail/PR campaigns.
  • Assist in grant writing and fundraising.
  • Assist in developing our database of media contacts for public relations, assist on arranging media interviews for our scientific staff, assist in writing and developing press releases and story pitches for the media
  • Good language skills-both written and spoken-are essential.
  • Great interest in medical and health-related fields.
  • Perform related work, as assigned.

Time period: 3-6 months

Skills and abilities desired:
Course work in Journalism, English, Health Education, Library and Information Sciences or a related field.

Other skills desired include:

  • Excellent phone, computer, research and communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Excel, Word, Power Point, Outlook, and the Internet.
  • Fact checking or writing experience a plus.
  • Ability to research, prepare, and direct information effectively to specific target audiences.
  • Self-starter and self-motivator.
  • Ability to work in a team environment as well as independently.
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects.

This is an unpaid internship, with potential for a future stipend if funds are available. The position will provide an excellent opportunity to gain “real world” experience in multiple fields including research, writing, PR and development. 3. Marketing Internship position

Internship description including duties:

  • Become proficient in the use of our marketing software program and assist in managing the sales database and online sales program.
  • Conduct market research and assist in implementing goals from our marketing plan.
  • Help in the development and preparation of marketing letters and packages for prospective clients.
  • Assist in the maintenance of our educational materials and their inventory
  • Help in packing and shipping products to clients
  • Assist in maintaining client relationships including developing new relationships
  • Publicize our materials to potential clients through email/phone
  • Assist in use of materials for publicity such as those used in shows/ conference/seminar exhibits
  • Assist in the building of a marketing database of potential high net worth clients
  • Assist with the building and ongoing enhancements of our web site
  • Prepare and assist with delivery of e-mail and/or paper newsletters
  • Assist with the coordinating of our direct mail campaigns
  • Develop promotional and merchandising strategies for sexual health materials
  • Assist in creative design and ensures relevance of materials to target audience, including developing creative layout at times
  • Assist in communicating with print companies and graphic designers for quotes and orders.
  • Assist in the creating, editing and proofreading of articles
  • Perform related work, as assigned

Time period: 3-6 months

Skills and abilities desired: Course work in business administration, marketing, communication, or a related field.

Other skills desired include:

  • Proficiency with Excel, Word, Power Point, Outlook, and the Internet.
  • Knowledge of principles and dynamics of marketing
